Into the Future

2012 was one of the best years in movies in recent memory but it is over. Now it is time to look forward to the movies of 2013. And right now it looks like a pretty good year. The thing I am most excited about is all the Sci-fi movies coming out this year. This looks like it is going to have just about every kind of sci-fi film, from a new Star Trek to original sci-fi (Obilvon, Elysium) to adapted (Ender’s Game). That is just the surface of the Sci-fi movies coming out this year. That aside there are five movies that I just cannot wait to see. They are listed below in no particular order.

The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug

Director: Peter Jackson

Major Actors: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and Benedict Cumberbatch

The first installment of this trilogy was not a disappointment which was a relief. My worries for this trilogy are with the third so I expect this one to be just as good as the first one may be better. What I am most excited for is seeing Smaug voiced by the talented Benedict Cumberbatch. This alone should make the movie. Plus how can you not be excited about more middle earth.

To the Wonder

Director: Terrence Malick

Major Actors: Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, and Javier Bardem

When I saw Malick’s Tree of Life a year ago. It was paradigm shifting in how I watch movies. It was the first movie I ever saw that I loved but could not give a reason. Expect  that it was one of the most beautiful films I had ever seen. So when I hear that Malick is doing a new film, I am really excited. The trailer finally came out a week ago and it looks like a beautiful film. It is early to tell but this is probably going to be a great film.

Elysium

Director: Neil Blomkamp

Major Actors: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley

As stated above, this year will probably be a good year in Sci-fi. Out of all the Sci-fi movies coming out this year Elysium is the one I am most excited about. The first reason is the director Blomkamp. This is going to be his second movie. His first (District 9) was one of the best original Sci-fis of the 2000s. So needless to say I have been waiting since then for his next. The second reason that unlike Blomkamp’s last movie, it will have A-list actors. With the likes of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, it is hard to miss. So with the combination of director and actors, this should be a great film.

Man of Steel

Director: Zack Snyder

Major Actors: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, and Russell Crowe

As it is goes for super hero movies, I think The Dark Knight will always be the best. But Man of Steel does look really promising. First you got the director of my favorite superhero movie (Watchmen) plus Nolan is producing which makes for a great combination. Second is the cast; Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Russel Crowe as Clark’s Dad, just to name a couple. But the thing that I think will set this apart from other superman movies is the story. From what I can tell it looks great. I am really hopeful that this will propel DC into a competition with Marvel. I am just tired of Marvel dominating the superhero market.

The Great Gatsby

Director: Baz Luhrman

Major Actors: Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire

I was so disappointed that this movie was moved from Christmas to this May. It would have just made last year perfect. Nevertheless, this should be a great film. Luhrmann is a really good director and will probably not miss. If that wasn’t enough the cast looks amazing. Dicaprio speaks for himself. He should have no problem playing Gatsby. Also Carey Mulligan reminds of a young Audrey Hepburn which if you know me that is a high compliment. Plus I will interested to see if this will Maguire’s career going again. All in all this should be an enjoyable film to watch.

Well there you have it. These are just five of the movies I can’t wait to see this year. While this year does not look as good as last year. There still should be some good films. Plus I don’t even know what is going to be coming later this year so we shall see.
