I have waited six years for the directors of Little Miss Sunshine to come out with another movie. Ruby Sparks was that movie and it was worth the wait. Ruby Sparks is an inventive funny romantic story. The basic story line is it about a young writer played by Paul Dano, who is having trouble writing his second book. And so on the suggestion of his therapist begins writing about what he thinks is the perfect girl for him. However, one day when he wakes up he discovers the girl in his house. This is one most interesting stories of the year.

Zoe Kazan, who is Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, wrote and plays the female romantic lead. First, for this being her first screenplay it was excellent. While this is an area of movie I am unfamiliar with. I can typically determine when I think the writing makes the movie. This is one of those movies. I will not write anymore of the subject since that’s about all I can say. When it came to her acting, she was just as excellent  I am sucker for a good female performance. Zoe was just a joy to watch on screen especially towards the end.

Zoe’s romantic opposite was played by Paul Dano. This is the second time he has worked with these directors. He starred in Little Miss Sunshine. He plays a different role in Ruby Sparks, in that he plays a writer who is socially awkward. He is just as much of joy to watch on screen as his opposite. His character really does what many men have down which think of the perfect then try and make each woman into that woman. Its just he has more control then other men do.

This leads me to my last point about the story itself. The formula itself reminded me of one of my favorite movies The Apartment. Let me be clear in no way am I putting Ruby Sparks on the same plane as The Apartment. But it does the same thing in that it is comedy that turns into a drama and does this very well. This is what made the story so easy to follow. In that it had many funny parts and then slowly becomes more serious as the movie progresses.

This is one of the best romances I have seen in long time and definitely one of the most inventive. This is one of the best films of the year. And if I was the Academy, I would make sure to throw this movie some Oscar love but that probably will not happen. In conclusion, if you enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine. You should enjoy Ruby Sparks as well.
