Dom’s First Haircut

February 7 was the day Dom lost his baby curls. Nate and I were so reluctant to do it. However, when he started getting tangles in the back of his hair, we knew the time had come. Since we were all looking a little shaggy, we decided to make appointments for the entire family. Since Ella has never been fond of having her hair brushed and refuses to wear a ponytail, we decided to get a short bob for her, as well. I don’t know which cut Nate was dreading more.

I was expecting Dom to pitch a fit. When I got his bangs trimmed last fall, he cried and wriggled through the whole thing. This time, however, he willingly got up in the chair and sat still as they put the cape around him. He didn’t like getting misted with water, so the stylist put the water on the comb. He was also not fond of the trim to his bangs, but that went fairly quickly. About halfway through, he started getting squirmy. It started with wanting his hands out from under the cape, then he started getting punchy – laughing and kicking his feet. Despite all the wiggling, he still got a fine cut and no tears were shed. Here are the before, during, and after shots.

Bama, Mama, Bama

We decided to let the kids stay up late last night – mainly so we could see President Obama’s first press conference, rather than get caught putting them to bed. I took Dominic upstairs right as it started to change his diaper. As we entered the basement, he immediately said “oh … oh… Bama, Mama, Bama.” The oh’s were not the first part of Obama, but expressions of excitement. I was both proud and laughing at the cuteness of it.

Once he sat down on my lap, he noticed that I was wearing my Obama t-shirt (purely a coincidence, mind you). He then spent the next 5 minutes pointing at my shirt and saying “Bama” and then the TV screen and saying “Bama.” Then, he pointed at Obama’s hair on my t-shirt, and the TV screen, and said, “Har … har.” I know he’s fascinated with hair, but this was the first time it wasn’t connected directly to wanting to put his hands in someones hair. The other thing he could have been saying was, “Here … here.” His pronunciation makes that one difficult to figure out.

Ella fell asleep during his opening speech (in her defense, she sorely missed a nap opportunity earlier in the day), but we were amazed that Dominic stayed up the whole time. You may have expected to hear that he offered astute commentary, but he was bouncing around the room and wanting to take down games to play with.

I was quite distressed this morning – as you can imagine – when he woke up at 5:30 am. I really wish that hour later would affect the waking time, as well!
