The Talker

In the past few days, Ella has constructed sentences such as:

“Where’s our car?  There’s our car!”

“Daddy! I see a motorcycle!”

“I put it back.”

“Pick me up, please.”

Mind you, none of them sound like that. It’s more like: “Weh ah cah? DER ah cah!” and “Daaaa! Ah see moh sy!” But still. Just as it was when she was first indicating that she understood words, I’ve stopped being surprised every time she puts some new construction together.

Of course, 80% of her language skills, she reserves for when only Suanna or I are present. If she knows you you’re likely to hear a little bit of her talking, but in front of strangers or even acquaintances, she clams up altogether. Not a peep. After storytime at the bookstore yesterday, she was looking for Miss Dinah, who had just read the stories, but didn’t see her anywhere. So she walked up to me and positively whispered “weh mi die?” as if she wanted to be sure nobody else could hear it. I look forward to when Ella is 15, at which point (fingers crossed) everybody will have the opportunity to hear her talk.

And then there’s times like just now, when I was asking her whether she was done with lunch and ready to get out of her chair, and she would only reply by making animals sounds . . .

Ella’s first extended time away from both Suanna _and_ I happened this past week, when we left her in the capable care of her grandparents (both sets, at different times) and headed to the Upper Peninsula. It was a very busy week for her, and she handled it admirably.

It’s funny — I never had much of a sense of how strict, relatively speaking, we were being with Ella when it came to sweets. But noticing other people feed her this past week, and seeing friends feed _their_ kids, I’m starting to get the sense that Suanna and I are anti-sweets fascists. I mean, I would _never_ give her a rice krispie bar. I guess that’s what grandparents are for, though.
“311″:http://www.polytropos.org/mt-static/ella/ella311.jpg — Ella’s latest obsession is snappy buckles. She has an amazing number of them in her life: on the car seat, on her high chair, on her backpack carrier, etc. She likes to snap them all, but she’s still not very good at _un_fastening them.
“312″:http://www.polytropos.org/mt-static/ella/ella312.jpg — The Ellamobile comes, not surprisingly, courtesy of Nana. Ella loves it. Nana has more toys for Ella at her house than we do at our apartment: that is not an exaggeration, but objective truth.

For whatever reason, after being plenty squeamish about cool water at home, she didn’t hesitate a single second before stepping into the (rather chilly) water in this particular pool. Or before sitting down in it. In her clothes.

Thunder Girl

As if we needed more evidence that Ella was a thrillseeker . . .

Just now, a big thunderclap thundered outside our window, taking Ella completely by surprise. She rushed to Suanna’s knee, fearful, until we told her what it was. After a moment’s thought, she pointed insistently at her palm and exclaimed, “Moh. Moh.” We’ve tried to explain that we’re not able to create thunder on cue, but so far she doesn’t seem to be buying it. She’s walking around the apartment saying “Moh thun. Moh thun.”
